Releasing Films in Japan

Our "commissioned screening" is a venue rental screening (貸館映影), which is different from the regular theatrical screening (ロードショー公開).
The advantage is that the screening time is flexible, and there is no need to wait for the cinema's schedule; the film can be shown immediately when needed.
The drawback is that all costs must be borne by the customer (rental fees, subtitles, advertising, administration, personnel, etc.).

delegation process

1️⃣ Sign the agency agreement

  • The client signed a "Japanese Film Screening Commission Agreement" with us.

  • It was clarified that we hold the screening rights in Japan and are responsible for contacting and coordinating screenings with cinemas, as well as handling related matters.

  • The agreement should specify the fee structure, box office revenue sharing ratio, and other expenses to be borne by the client.

2️⃣ Document Preparation and Submission

  • Yinglun District Distinguishing Certificate (Number)

  • Video copies (DCP / Blu-ray, etc.)

  • Japanese subtitle files (if unavailable, we can handle the translation and production).

  • Japanese poster, trailer, and film synopsis (for promotional purposes)

  • Production company authorization documents confirming the filming rights in Japan.

3️⃣ Contacting cinemas and scheduling dates

  • We will help our clients find suitable cinemas (such as AEON, Yunaite, Himax, etc.).

  • Confirm the cinema rental schedule, seating capacity, and venue conditions.

  • Sign a "Theater Use Contract" with the cinema to finalize the rental fees, usage terms, and screening conditions.

4️⃣ Technical preparation and test screening

  • We coordinate with the cinema regarding their projection equipment needs (DCP, Blu-ray, PC projector, etc.).

  • Arrange a test screening to check the subtitles, aspect ratio, and sound effects.

  • If any changes are required, we will be responsible for communicating and adjusting them with our technical staff.

5️⃣ Promotion and Ticket Sales

  • Tickets are sold through the cinema's ticketing system (the cinema charges a 3%–10% handling fee).

  • Customers can also sell tickets themselves (they need to arrange their own entry management).

  • Promotional materials: Posters and information on the cinema's official website.

  • For larger-scale promotion (media, public relations, social media advertising), the client will bear the additional costs.

6️⃣ Release Execution

  • On the day of the screening, our staff arrived early to complete on-site confirmation and screening preparations.

  • The film will be played by our professional projectionist (as this is a venue rental, the cinema does not provide projectionists).

  • Stage greetings, guest attendance, and other activities can be arranged as needed (at an additional cost).

  • We assisted with on-site management and coordination throughout the screening.

7️⃣ Settlement after release

  • Box office statistics: Total box office revenue is confirmed by the cinema system or customer-sold ticket data.

  • If the cinema sells the tickets on your behalf, a 3%–10% handling fee will be deducted first.

  • Of the remaining net box office revenue, we will receive 30% as distribution agent commission, and the remaining 70% will be paid to the client or designated rights holder.

  • Cost breakdown: All costs related to subtitling, advertising, translation, administration, transportation, insurance, and other actual expenses incurred shall be borne by the client.

  • Report delivery: We submit a screening summary and box office settlement report to the client.
